Grade 1 of the Bible Nurture and Reader Series is planned to provide texts and workbooks for the pupil's basic needs in the first grade, with the exception of arithmetic and music. It correlates reading, phonics, language, spelling, and penmanship.
The readers and workbooks are arranged in 5 units with 30 lessons in each unit, making a total of 150 lessons. Each lesson has five divisions: Reader, Reading Workbook, Phonics Workbook, Worksheets, and the optional Printing Practice. All of these divisions relate to one another in a given lesson thus thoroughly acquainting the child with the lesson for each day.
The 3 readers contain Unit 1 (71 pages, soft-cover), Units 2, 3 (159 pages, hardcover) and Units 4, 5 (247 pages, hardcover) respectively. The first unit has the story of the Creation and the Fall of Man. The second unit reviews the story of the Creation and continues with the stories of Cain, Abel, and Noah, incorporating practical applications. The lessons in the third unit are in poetry form and include stories from the Creation until after the Flood. The fourth unit contains stories about Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The fifth unit contains stories about Joseph and Jesus. The story of Jesus is from the Gospel of Matthew.
There are 3 separate reading workbooks with 77 pages in Unit 1 workbook, and 127 pages in each of the other 2 workbooks. The workbooks have 2 pages for each lesson. The exercises are closely associated to the corresponding lessons in the readers. These exercises include practice with the vocabulary words, practice in writing sentences, drills for developing comprehension skills, and seat work in various forms.
The 3 phonics workbooks consist of Unit 1 (95 pages), Units 2 and 3 (131 pages), and Units 4 and 5 (131 pages). The phonics workbooks have two pages for each lesson. The first unit teaches the basic single consonant sounds as well as the short and long vowel sounds. The following four units continue to teach and review letter sounds and their combinations, give practice with phonetic words, and provide seatwork in phonics.
The worksheets provide constructive seatwork and exercises in cuttin, pasting, etc. There is generally one worksheet for each day, which is perforated for removal. In the first three units, the worksheets are closely associated with the reading lesson or the Bible memory verse. In the fourth unit are language worksheets; in the last unit a picture dictionary is made.
The teacher's manuals for Unit 1 (327 pages), Units 2 and 3 (428 pages), and Units 4 and 5 (424 pages) include instructions for both phonics and reading. (Brief directions are also given for the worksheets and printing practice.) There are general suggestions for teaching the various concepts as well as detailed procedures for teaching each lesson. The manuals include vocabulary and comprehension drills and reductions of the workbook pages, with the answers in red. By carefully following the directions, the inexperienced teacher can teach phonics with the satisfaction of knowing what to teach and how to present it effectively to the class.
These flash cards are designed to be used with the Bible Nurture and Reader Series. The Vocabulary Word Cards and the Phrase Cards are used with Units 1 and 2. The Phonics Cards are used for all 5 units.
There are Vocabulary Word Cards for each reading word introduced in the first two units of Grade 1. There are 61 cards for Unit 1 and 189 cards for Unit 2, making a total of 250 cards.
The Phrase Cards include phrases from the reading lessons for the first two units of Grade 1. There are 88 cards for Unit 1 and 134 cards for Unit 2, for a total of 222 cards. These cards help to develop quick recognition and smooth reading skills.
The Phonics Cards are divided into ten sets as follows, making a total of 186 cards. The Alphabet (26), Consonant Sounds (21), Vowel Sounds (17), Combination Sounds (6), Digraphs (23), Consonant Blends (39), Diphthongs (94), Letters With More Than One Sound (8), Letter Sounds With Certain Letters (27), Silent Letters (15).
The printing books that accompany this series are optional. They are included in Grade 1 only, and it is appropriate to transfer to our penmanship series for the following grades. The BNRS Printing Practice teaches the formation of each letter as it is introduced for reading purposes. In Unit 1 (80 pages), pupils print small letters and numbers according to what sounds they are learning in Phonics lessons. In Unit 3, they print capital letters relating to the poetry form used in Unit 3 or their reading lessons. Units 4 and 5 are together in one workbook of 128 pages. In Unit 4, they review capital and small letters (Aa, Bb, Cc, etc.) on paper with 1/2 inch line spacing, along with practicing sentences that relate to their reader stories. In Unit 5, pupils have practice writing their Bible memory verses (The Lord's Prayer) for that unit.
The Penmanship for Christian Writing Series gives more emphasis on strokes. Letters are introduced according to similarity in strokes. We are giving our customers a choice. We recommend Printing Practice if the Bible Nurture and Reading Series is used to teach reading, but both penmanship systems are used very effectively, and the two could profitably be used together.
