This hardcover textbook provides 34 weekly lessons. Each regular lesson lists sixteen New Words and four Review Words. Each lesson has four main parts and an additional part to challenge able students.
Part A, Sounds and Letters, introduces common spelling patterns for one or more phonetic sounds. Pupils work mostly with the words in the spelling lists, but they also work with other words that have the same spelling patterns. Continual review is included as well.
Part B, Using Your Words, strengthens the understanding of word meanings. Pupils work with synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, and other frequently confused words. Included in various exercises are multiple meanings of words, context clues, categories of words, and analogous relationships.
Part C, Dictionary Skills, enables pupils to find words in the dictionary and to learn their spellings, pronunciations, and meanings.
Part D, Building Words, teaches spelling patterns according to structure. Practice is given in building plurals, verb forms, comparisons, possessives, and compound words; in spelling abbreviations and contractions; and in identifying syllables.
Subject Words is an additional part, indicated by a star. It is not necessarily related to the other parts of the lesson, although the spelling patterns already learned are used in doing the exercises. Rather, this section teaches spelling words from other school subjects and aids in developing skills in research work.
At the back of the book, the Speller Dictionary includes the New Words, Review Words, Subject Words, and other words needed for Parts A, B, C, and D.
